Curriculum Newsletter - Grade 3                                                           January 24, 2020

This letter gives you information about the curriculum taught in the first term of grade three.

Math
In Math this term, students have been specifically working on:
     Double digit number operations to create and solve problems with regrouping
     Analyzing data - using bar graphs, line plots, counting and surveys to display and interpret data in more than one way
     Measuring using non-traditional forms of measurement(ex: pencils, mittens, shoes) for length, width and height
     Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of numbers with answers to 1000 (limited to 1- and 2-digit numerals this term), concretely, pictorially and symbolically
     Increasing and decreasing patterns - numerical and non-numerical
Language Arts
Students have explored a wide variety of informational and narrative texts, reading independently, in small groups and as a whole class. When writing, students have practiced writing letters, persuasive letters, book reflections, and summative pieces.
     Make predictions, make inferences and draw conclusions
     Identify the main idea or topic
     Extend sight vocabulary
     Read silently with increasing confidence and accuracy
     Use textual cues and punctuation to read accurately, fluently and with comprehension
     Use phonics and structural analysis to read unfamiliar words
     Understand techniques and elements including events, setting and characters when summarizing or retelling
     Structure texts using a variety of story beginnings, interesting events, and dynamic endings
     Appraise own and others' work, through revisions and editing
     Attend to grammar, adding adjectives and adverbs to add interest and detail
     Attend to capitalization and punctuation
Social Studies
Students have participated in Social Studies activities this term to connect with the world and learn about :
     Citizenship
     Identity
     Global Connections
     Culture and Community
     Land and Resources
Science
Students have engaged in and discovered Science this term through scientific inquiry, problem-solving through technology, attitudes, and understandings.
     Rocks and minerals
     Life Cycles
     Testing and Building with a variety of materials
Physical Education
Students have participated in Health and Physical Education through:
     Soccer
     Fitness Challenges
     Basketball
     Volleyball
     Cooperative Games
     Taekwondo
Art
Students have explored natural and man-made forms, exploring depth, detail, and perspective with:
     Acrylic paint
     Watercolor paint
     Pastels and pencil drawings
     Recycled materials
Music
     The grade three students are listening to the characteristics of different instruments.
     They are beginning to identify and sort instruments into their orchestra family (string, percussion, woodwind and brass).
     When they listen to a piece of music, they are learning to identify whether it is in a minor or major key.
      The grade three students performed three songs at the winter concert.
     They demonstrated their ability to sing in a group and take cues from the conductor.
